End of Year Reflection

As the year comes to a close, I find myself reminiscing on the amount of personal time I was graced with. I have truly come to appreciate how invaluable time is due to how it is commodified by society. This is why the popular phrase “time is money”, rings true! A classic example is how our capitalistic system forces us to produce labor in order to access basic needs. Most people, who don’t have disposable income to spend, are prone to live paycheck to paycheck, without personal time for themselves! As a result, our time is robbed from us without our consent!

This past year, I have maximized the most of my time through the practice of time reclamation. Outside of having to work for survival, I have been very frugal about extending myself unnecessarily. Unless I am spending time engaging in activities that bring me joy, I would rather reserve that energy for personal growth! Since time is a unique currency that cannot be regained, spending it intentionally is paramount.

Something that brought me joy this year is the amount of rest I was able to gain. Lots and lots of sleep, even naps, were much appreciated. The amount of being present and stillness I experienced was transformational in unpacking generational traumas. Considering the fact that my ancestors had absolutely no time to just exist, due to being colonized and enslaved to death, I take great pride in idleness! It actually brings tears to my eyes knowing my ancestors are healing through me accessing something that was out of reach for them.

We all experience time differently depending on our access to capital. So for those who can’t opt out of working, how do you spend the time you do actually have control over? Since we live on borrowed time, reclaiming your time, to your best capacity, will allow for a more fruitful life experience.
