The Power of Pleasure

In honor of Libra season, I will be discussing the importance of pleasure in our lives. When most people think of pleasure, the first thing that comes to mind is sexual pleasure, but there are other ways to experience pleasure beyond orgasms. You can use your senses of touch, smell, sight, taste, and hearing to experience pleasure.

Being fully present is an important aspect of maximizing your pleasure. When it comes to touch, I particularly enjoy going to the beach and fully immersing myself in the water to the point where only my head is sticking out. This experience brings me so much joy because I find water to be very healing to my physical body and mental state.

When it comes to smell, I enjoy cooking my favorite childhood meals because they bring me great nostalgia. The smell of the aroma and the actual taste of the meal transports me back to my childhood memories. I am intentional about savoring every bite and eating as if it might be my last meal. This allows me to fully enjoy the food while reminiscing on the best moments of my life.

As a cinephile, I engage my sense of sight by binge-watching my favorite movies and TV shows. My favorite pastime is sleeping in and watching things I like all day while I’m snuggled up in bed. I also enjoy listening to music, which I find to be very healing by uplifting my spirits. These acts bring me so much pleasure and help me remember the beauty of the simplest things life has to offer.

Intentionally doing things that please you can transform your life for the better. The power of intentional pleasure lies in the sense of gratitude it evokes out of you. The energy of gratitude is an important component of creating more abundance for yourself in this life.  However,  it is important not to overindulge because too much of a good thing can be harmful.
